Engravings / Etchings - the technique

The etching is an artistic printing technique. The manufacturing method is since 500 years the same: Pure handwork! Already the old masters, such as Rembrandt and Goya worked with this centuries old handprinting-technique.The creation of an etching is divided in two separate steps:

With a steel-engraving-needle the artist scratches the design into a varnish-covered copper- or zinkplate. Some lines are etched to the desired depth in an acid-bath.

For every etching the plate is covered newly with colour and the surface is rubbed clean again. The printing is done with a hand-driven printing-press on wet, handmade paper, afterwards each one has to be dried.
